Curriculum at a Glance

At Francis Baily Primary School, we are passionate about providing a rich and inspiring curriculum that prepares children for life in modern Britain. Our teaching is designed to spark curiosity, encourage resilience and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Curriculum Intent

We want every child to:

  • Develop strong skills in reading, writing and maths as the foundation for all learning
  • Explore a broad and balanced range of subjects, from science and history to music and art
  • Grow in confidence, independence and creativity
  • Learn to ask questions, think critically and discover their own passions
  • Understand the wider world and their place within it.

Curriculum Implementation

We bring our curriculum to life by:

  • Following the National Curriculum as the minimum expectation for all subjects
  • Planning exciting, well-sequenced lessons that build knowledge step by step
  • Making links across subjects, so children see how learning connects
  • Using trips, visitors and enrichment experiences to extend learning
  • Meeting the needs of all pupils through differentiation and targeted support.

All subjects are organised in carefully sequenced topics, which means pupils can build their understanding securely and become knowledge ‘rich’.  This allows our pupils to feel empowered and realise their full potential in preparation for the next phase of their learning.

In all subjects, the most important subject knowledge has been identified and is revisited for pupils to have opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills. The National Curriculum requirements will be covered carefully over time and assessment of each subject will inform future teaching. We aspire to provide a curriculum that reflects our diverse community, and is regularly reviewed to ensure it is current, honest and relevant.

All pupils will have regular opportunities in every lesson to practise, demonstrate and improve their oracy skills, e.g. discussions, questioning, debates, talk partners and drama activities.  This is part of their learning across all subjects and is essential for them to become articulate, resilient and confident.

Year group overviews can be found on our Key Stage pages; Curriculum progression maps can be found on our individual subject pages.

Curriculum Impact

We measure the success of our curriculum by:

  • Tracking pupil progress in every subject
  • Regular assessment to identify next steps
  • Pupil voice (children sharing what they’ve learnt and enjoyed)
  • Strong outcomes at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2.

We endeavour to provide inspiring and memorable experiences both in lessons with their teachers and through educational visits or visitors to our school (building upon their cultural capital).
