Francis Baily Primary School is part of the Equinox Learning Trust, and governance is provided at both Trust and local school level. Together, our governors help to make sure the school provides the very best education for every child.

What Do Governors Do?

Our governors:

• Set the school’s vision, values and strategic priorities
• Hold leaders to account for educational standards and safeguarding
• Oversee the school’s finances and use of resources
• Support and challenge the Headteacher and leadership team.

Our Local Governing Body

The Local Governing Body (LGB) includes a mix of parents, staff, Trust-appointed governors and community representatives. This ensures that a wide range of voices help shape the direction of the school.

How our Governors are Appointed

Our Local Governing Body is a committee of the Equinox Learning Trust Board. Governors join in one of four ways:

• Trust-appointed governors are appointed by the Trust Board for the skills and experience they bring.
• Parent governors are elected by a secret ballot of all parents and carers of pupils at [School name]. Candidates must be a parent or carer of a pupil at the school when they are elected. We have at least two parent governors.
• Staff governors are elected by a secret ballot of staff at Kennet School. Teaching staff elect a teaching staff governor, and non-teaching staff elect a non-teaching staff governor. A staff governor stops being a governor if they leave the school.
• The Headteacher is a governor automatically, because of their role.

Elected governors are formally confirmed by the Trust Board. All Governors, except the Headteacher, normally serve for a term of office of four years but can be reappointed.

As part of the Equinox Learning Trust, our governors also work closely with the Trust Board and leadership team. This ensures that Francis Baily benefits from strong oversight and the sharing of best practice across all Trust schools.
