Transition to Secondary School

Moving on to secondary school is an exciting milestone for every child. At Francis Baily Primary School, we make sure this transition is smooth, supportive and positive, so pupils feel ready to take their next step with confidence.

Our Approach

We work closely with local secondary schools, parents and pupils to make the process as straightforward as possible. Transition support includes:

  • Visits and taster days at local secondary schools
  • Meetings with Secondary School Year 7 staff to share information about pupils’ learning and wellbeing
  • Small group or 1:1 support for children who may find the move more challenging
  • Celebrations of achievements at the end of Year 6 to mark the next stage of their journey.

Applying for Secondary School

Applications for secondary places are made through West Berkshire Council Admissions.

  • Applications usually open in September of Year 6.
  • The deadline for applications is usually the end of October.
  • Offers are typically sent out at the beginning of March.

Extra Support for Pupils

Some children may need extra help preparing for this change. We offer ongoing support from our pastoral team and SENCO where needed.
