British Values

Union Jack flag with British values written on itAt Francis Baily Primary School in Thatcham, we actively promote the core British Values as part of our curriculum and wider school life. These values help prepare children to be responsible, respectful and active citizens in modern Britain.

The Five Fundamental British Values

We teach and model the following values throughout the school:

  • Democracy – giving pupils a voice and involving them in decision-making
  • Rule of Law – helping children understand why rules matter and how they keep us safe
  • Individual Liberty – encouraging pupils to make choices, express themselves and take responsibility
  • Mutual Respect – treating others with kindness and valuing different opinions
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – learning about and respecting people from all backgrounds, faiths and cultures.

How We Promote British Values

At Francis Baily Primary School, these values are woven into daily life:

  • School Council & Pupil Voice – children are elected to represent their peers and contribute ideas
  • Curriculum Links – subjects such as History, PSHE, and Religious Education explore democracy, rights, culture and diversity
  • Assemblies & Events – whole-school themes and celebrations highlight respect, fairness and equality
  • Behaviour & Relationships – our policies emphasise respect, responsibility and understanding
  • Community Links – we work with local organisations, charities and faith groups to broaden pupils’ experiences.

Why British Values Matter

By understanding and practising these values, our pupils learn to:

  • Respect the rights of others
  • Challenge prejudice and stereotypes
  • Celebrate diversity
  • Make positive contributions to their school and community.

This prepares every child not only for secondary school, but also for life in a diverse and democratic society.
