It's Officially Open!

Pupils, staff and guests celebrate the official opening of a brand-new building.
Pupils, staff and guests gathered at Francis Baily Primary School to celebrate the official opening of a brand-new building for the school’s Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.
The new facility was formally opened on 20 March 2026 by the Mayor of Thatcham, Councillor Petra Pemberton, who joined pupils and staff to mark the occasion and tour the new learning spaces.
Designed to support the next stage of pupils’ education before they move on to secondary school, the building includes six new classrooms, two breakout learning areas and has been built with sustainability in mind. The design of the building will ensure that it has a minimal environmental impact as well as keep running costs as low as possible. The building provides modern facilities in order to support collaborative and independent learning.
The project began in 2022 and was funded by the Department for Education through a successful bid to the Condition Improvement Fund.
During the event, pupils helped welcome guests and showcased the new building, giving visitors the opportunity to see the facilities in use.
Headteacher, Miss Elizabeth Hobbs, said: “It is wonderful to see the new building now open. This moment represents a truly significant step forward for our school. The new spaces provide a brighter, more inspiring environment that will enhance every child’s experience of learning and play. These improvements support our long-held aspirations for our pupils, giving them the facilities they deserve and creating opportunities for curiosity, creativity, and confidence to flourish. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved and excited for everything this new chapter will bring for our children, our staff, and our community.”
Chair of Governors, Mrs Ginette Kilroy, added: “We cannot underestimate the impact that the physical environment has on enabling children to achieve their highest potential and supporting their mental wellbeing, which is equally critical for learning. This building will ensure that both current and future students are able to achieve their very best.”
Pupils have already begun using the building and say they are enjoying the bright and modern spaces. Maisie (Year 6), said: “I think the new building is fantastic; the classrooms are massive and the window view is amazing. The new building is a privilege to have as not many schools have new buildings presently. It is very clean inside and well-kept.”
The opening marks an important milestone for the school and reflects its continued commitment to providing high-quality learning environments for its pupils.
