English as an Additional Language

At Francis Baily Primary School, we are proud to be a diverse and inclusive community where every child and family is welcomed, supported and valued, no matter what language is spoken at home. We recognise that learning in a new language can be challenging. Our commitment is to ensure that children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) feel confident, included and able to thrive both socially and academically.

Our Approach

Children who are learning English alongside their home language are supported in ways that recognise their individual needs and strengths. We aim to:

  • Build confidence in speaking, reading and writing English
  • Support access to the full curriculum at the right level
  • Celebrate the strengths and cultural backgrounds of multilingual learners
  • Ensure strong communication and partnership with families.

Every EAL pupil is carefully monitored to track progress and ensure the right support is in place.

Resources & Support

Francis Baily has invested in a wide range of resources to help EAL learners and their families, including:

  • Access to digital platforms to build vocabulary and comprehension
  • Translation tools to support communication between home and school
  • Dual-language books and inclusive reading materials
  • Small-group or 1:1 support where appropriate

Our teachers are trained to use visual aids, clear routines and scaffolding techniques so all children can access learning confidently. We also work with West Berkshire’s Ethnic Minority Traveller (EMTAS) to provide additional support.

Working with Families

We know that strong partnerships with families make a big difference, especially when English is not a first language. We aim to:

  • Offer translated materials whenever possible
  • Communicate clearly and accessibly
  • Encourage parents to speak with us openly about questions or concerns.

We are here to support both you and your child every step of the way.
