Key Stage 1
At Francis Baily, Key Stage 1 builds on the strong foundations laid in Early Years. We support children as they grow in independence, confidence and curiosity across a broad and engaging curriculum. Oracy remains central to our approach. We create a language-rich environment where children learn through conversation, collaboration and high-quality texts.
Year 1
The transition from Reception to Year 1 is carefully supported. In the autumn term, we continue working within the Early Learning Goals, helping children adjust smoothly to the expectations of the National Curriculum while maintaining their enthusiasm for learning.
- English: We use high-quality, language-rich texts that reflect both our pupils and the wider community to inspire meaningful writing.
- Maths: We build on early number knowledge, introducing times tables and word problems that develop reasoning and real-life problem-solving skills using practical resources.
- Science: Our science curriculum sparks curiosity through hands-on investigations, exploring materials, seasonal changes, weather patterns and living things.
Our aim is to nurture curiosity, compassion and resilience, supporting the holistic development of every child.

Year 2
Year 2 is a vital year that prepares children for Key Stage 2. Our curriculum remains broad and engaging, helping pupils consolidate their knowledge and deepen their skills across all subjects.
- English: Children explore a wide range of inspiring texts that develop both a love of reading and critical thinking.
- Maths: The focus is on mastering the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), laying a secure foundation for more complex concepts in later years.
- Across the Curriculum: Oracy continues to underpin learning. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, ask questions and share ideas with clarity and confidence.
By the end of Key Stage 1, our pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their learning, equipped with strong core skills, a sense of achievement and a positive, curious mindset.
