Languages
At Francis Baily, we want pupils to be inspired by learning languages and to enjoy discovering how communication works in different cultures. Through our Languages curriculum, children gain the confidence to speak, listen, read and write in another language, while also developing curiosity about the wider world.
Our Intent
We aim for pupils to:
- Learn French through engaging, well-sequenced lessons
- Practise the three pillars of phonics, grammar and vocabulary
- Develop skills across speaking, listening, reading and writing
- Build knowledge step by step, revisiting key concepts regularly
- Strengthen their oracy and listening skills through paired, group and class activities.
How We Teach Languages
Pupils have opportunities to:
- Take part in creative speaking and listening games
- Build vocabulary through songs, rhymes and storytelling
- Practise pronunciation and spelling patterns in French phonics
- Develop confidence in using French for real-life situations
- Make cross-curricular and cultural links to deepen understanding.
The Impact
Through our Languages curriculum, pupils become:
- Curious learners who are excited by new words and sounds
- Confident communicators who can express themselves in another language
- Culturally aware citizens who appreciate diversity and global connections
- Resilient learners who can revisit and apply knowledge over time.
