Music
At Francis Baily, we believe that music enriches learning, inspires creativity and brings people together. Our Music curriculum ensures that every child has the opportunity to listen, perform, compose and enjoy music from a wide range of styles and traditions.
Our Intent
We aim for pupils to:
- Develop skills in singing, listening, composing and performing
- Experience music from different cultures, times and genres
- Build confidence in using musical vocabulary to describe and discuss music
- Learn to play instruments and use digital tools to create their own compositions
- Enjoy making music together through whole-class, group and individual opportunities.
How We Teach Music
Our music curriculum is supported with Charanga. Children have opportunities to:
- Take part in weekly music lessons with specialist teaching and class-based activities
- Sing regularly in class, assemblies and performances
- Learn to play tuned and untuned instruments
- Explore rhythm, pitch, notation and musical structure
- Compose, improvise and share their own pieces of music
- Perform for different audiences, from peers to families and the wider community.
Enrichment Opportunities
Music is celebrated in our school through:
- Choir and musical ensembles
- School productions and concerts
- Instrumental tuition delivered by visiting teachers, such as Berkshire Music Trust and Drum with Alex
- Participation in local music festivals and Trust-wide events.
The Impact
Through our Music curriculum, pupils become:
- Confident performers who enjoy sharing music with others
- Creative composers who can express ideas through sound
- Attentive listeners who appreciate a wide range of music
- Collaborative learners who enjoy making music as part of a group.
