Maths

Star Icon deplicting the subject MathsAt Francis Baily, we believe that mathematics provides the foundation for understanding the world. Our Maths curriculum is designed to help children become fluent, confident and resilient problem-solvers who can apply their skills in school and beyond.

Our Intent

We aim for pupils to:

  • Develop fluency in number, calculation and key mathematical facts
  • Reason mathematically by spotting patterns, making connections and justifying answers
  • Apply their knowledge to solve problems in real-life and abstract contexts
  • Build confidence, perseverance and enjoyment in tackling mathematical challenges
  • Use mathematical language clearly through our whole-school focus on oracy.

How We Teach Maths

We follow the principles of mastery of mathematics, ensuring all pupils:

  • Develop a deep understanding of numbers through the NCETM Mastering Number programme, which builds strong early number sense and fluency in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 through short daily sessions using visual models and calculating frames, known as rekenreks, to secure solid foundations for future maths learning.
  • Secure a deep understanding of key concepts before moving on
  • Use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to support learning
  • Practise daily recall of number facts to build fluency
  • Apply knowledge across the curriculum. For example, in Science, Computing and Design & Technology
  • Engage in discussions that encourage explanation, reasoning and questioning.

Times Tables & Number Fluency

By the end of Year 4, pupils are expected to recall all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. We provide:

  • Daily practice through the Number Sense programme in Years 3, 4, and 5, with further recall and consolidation in Year 6
  • The online platform, Times Tables Rock Stars, supplements the Number Sense programme and is also encouraged for use at home
  • Additional support for children who need further consolidation.

The Impact

Through our Maths curriculum, children become:

  • Fluent mathematicians who can recall and apply knowledge quickly and accurately
  • Confident reasoners who can explain and justify their thinking
  • Resilient problem-solvers who persevere with challenges
  • Independent learners ready to use maths in secondary school and beyond.
