Design & Technology

Star Icon deplicting the subject Design and TechnologyAt Francis Baily Primary School, our Design & Technology (DT) curriculum inspires children to become curious, creative problem-solvers who can design and make purposeful products for real-life use. We want every pupil to combine imagination with technical skill to turn their ideas into practical outcomes.

Our Intent

We aim for pupils to:

  • Follow the design process of researching, planning, making and evaluating
  • Create functional and appealing products that solve real problems
  • Apply knowledge and skills from maths, science, computing and art
  • Explore how things work through mechanisms, structures, textiles, food technology and digital design
  • Develop resilience by testing, adapting and improving their prototypes.

How We Teach Design & Technology

Pupils have opportunities to:

  • Investigate existing products and learn from real-world examples
  • Experiment with materials, tools and techniques safely
  • Work individually and collaboratively to design and build models
  • Use technical vocabulary to explain their ideas and processes
  • Present and evaluate their outcomes, reflecting on successes and improvements.

Oracy in Design & Technology

In line with our school focus on oracy, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Talk through their design choices
  • Explain how their prototypes work
  • Give and receive feedback constructively
  • Collaborate effectively in teams.

The Impact

By the time they leave Francis Baily, our pupils are:

  • Creative thinkers who enjoy designing and making
  • Resilient learners who can test, adapt and refine ideas
  • Practical problem-solvers who can apply skills across different subjects
  • Confident collaborators ready to take on challenges beyond the classroom.
