Computing

Star Icon deplicting the subject ComputingAt Francis Baily Primary School, we want every child to become a confident, creative and responsible digital citizen. Our Computing curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to use technology safely, purposefully and effectively in today’s digital world.

Our Intent

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Be introduced to fundamental principles like computational thinking (abstraction, logic, and algorithms)
  • Create, code, communicate and problem-solve using a range of digital tools
  • Understand how computer systems and networks operate
  • Design, write and debug their own programs
  • Reflect on how technology shapes everyday life
  • Develop the confidence to use technology with curiosity, creativity and care.

How We Teach Computing

Children learn through practical, engaging activities in three strands: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, which are interleaved so that pupils revisit and deepen their understanding, such as:

Coding and programming with age-appropriate software and devices

  • Using technology to support learning across other subjects
  • Exploring how networks, hardware and software work together
  • Creating digital content including presentations, multimedia and data handling
  • Discussing real-world applications of technology.

Online Safety

Staying safe online is at the heart of our approach. Pupils are taught through eight strands:

  • Self-Image & Identity: Exploring the differences between online and offline identities and the impact of technology on self-perception and behaviour
  • Online Relationships: Learning strategies for positive interaction in digital communities and understanding concepts like consent and respectful communication
  • Online Reputation: Developing an understanding of digital footprints and how online information can be used by others to make judgments
  • Online Bullying: Identifying various forms of online aggression and mastering effective reporting and intervention strategies
  • Managing Online Information: Critically evaluating data and recognising risks such as misinformation, disinformation, and "fake news"
  • Health, Wellbeing & Lifestyle: Examining how technology affects mood, sleep, and physical health, while identifying negative online behaviours
  • Privacy & Security: Learning both technical and behavioural strategies to protect personal data and systems against compromise
  • Copyright & Ownership: Understanding the rules of ownership for digital content and the consequences of illegal distribution.

For more details, please see the Online Safety section of our Safeguarding page.

Oracy in Computing

In line with our whole-school focus on oracy, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Explain their digital thinking
  • Share strategies for solving problems
  • Reflect on digital choices and their impact.

The Impact

By the time they leave Francis Baily, our pupils are:

  • Digitally literate and confident in using a range of tools
  • Independent thinkers who can adapt to new technologies
  • Responsible users who understand online safety and digital citizenship.
