Phonics - Read Write Inc

How is phonics taught at Francis Baily?

At Francis Baily we are committed to the delivery of excellence in teaching phonics. We aim to develop each child so they are able to read fluently and confidently as well as enriching their vocabulary and developing a love of reading.

Read Write Inc. like all phonics schemes, it teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc. Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words). The children will quickly feel confident and successful.

Below is the link to the RWI website which includes videos about the scheme, a break down of the sounds within each learning set, videos to support parents and eBooks.  Within each set of sounds listed on the website there are links to videos about blending or pronouncing the sounds as well a practice sheets so children can practice at home.

All children have access to the eBook library of RWI books online. As well as getting a physical book in school, children can also access an array of books online (which works on tablets or phones).

Phonics Check

At the end of Year One children will complete a phonics check. For those children who do not pass the phonics check in Year One then this is also repeated at the end of Year Two.  Phonics can be continued into Key Stage Two for children requiring additional support to secure their learning and sessions would follow the same teaching sequence.
